Historical outline of the Faculty of Economics

The historic decision to found a university in Ticino was taken in the early 1990s. The creation of a Faculty of Economics was seen as a natural priority, side by side with the Academy of Architecture. Lugano had long been playing a well-suited role as a major banking and financial centre well rooted in the a border area. The Steering Committee, comprising Mauro Baranzini, Remigio Ratti, and Lanfranco Senn, benefited from close collaborative ties with the Bocconi University, the Catholic University of Milan, and some Swiss universities, in their efforts to launch a Faculty with a clear and sound teaching and research profile. The surrounding Italian-speaking region of Switzerland was positive in its response to the new academic venture; the initial number of registered students exceeded all expectations.
